What Do Dentists Do?

Many Americans enjoy excellent oral health and keep their natural teeth for life. However, dental issues such as cavities remain common, particularly among children. Unfortunately, some people believe they only need to visit a dentist when they’re in pain, missing the broader benefits of regular dental care. A dental visit means more than just treating a problem; it’s about prevention and maintaining overall health. Dentists are doctors of oral health, equipped to diagnose and treat conditions ranging from routine to highly complex.

A Team Approach

Dentistry involves a comprehensive team approach to ensure continuity of care. The team includes dental assistants, lab technicians, and hygienists, all led by a dentist. Dentists earn either a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree, both of which reflect their extensive training in oral health.

The Dentist’s Role

Dentists play a critical role in:

  • Diagnosing oral diseases
  • Promoting oral health and disease prevention
  • Creating treatment plans to restore oral health
  • Interpreting x-rays and diagnostic tests
  • Administering anesthetics safely
  • Monitoring teeth and jaw development
  • Performing surgical procedures in the oral cavity

Even routine procedures carry potential risks, making the dentist’s oversight vital to ensuring safe and effective care.

More than Just Teeth and Gums

Dentists don’t just focus on teeth and gums; they care for the entire oral region, including the muscles of the head and neck, the salivary glands, and the nervous system. During a comprehensive exam, dentists check for abnormalities like lumps, swelling, and ulcers. They also perform diagnostic tests and screen for chronic conditions, such as oral cancer. Dentists can spot early signs of diseases that may affect the entire body, and when necessary, refer patients to specialists for further care.

Why Oral Health Matters

Scientific research has shown strong links between oral health and general health conditions, including diabetes and heart disease. The World Health Organization emphasizes oral health in its chronic disease prevention efforts, given the interconnected risks. The American Dental Association recommends that children begin dental visits by their first birthday to establish a dental home. Regular dental care throughout life helps prevent and treat oral health issues before they become serious.

Healthy Teeth, Healthy Heart

Your oral health can affect your heart health. Gum disease is a risk factor for heart disease, and research suggests a connection between oral bacteria and conditions like clogged arteries and stroke. Although it’s not yet proven that treating gum disease reduces heart disease risk, maintaining good oral hygiene is important for overall health. Follow these daily tips:

  • Brush twice a day
  • Floss daily
  • Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months
  • Schedule regular dental cleanings
  • Eat a healthy diet and limit snacks

Caring for your teeth can contribute to a healthy heart!

Dental Emergency Tips

Knowing how to handle a dental emergency can save your tooth. Here are some quick tips:

  • Knocked-Out Tooth: Handle the tooth by the crown, rinse if dirty, and place it back in the socket if possible. If not, store it in milk or water and get to a dentist quickly.
  • Broken Tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water, apply cold compresses, and see a dentist immediately.
  • Bitten Tongue or Lip: Clean the area, apply cold compresses, and go to the ER if the bleeding doesn’t stop.
  • Objects Caught Between Teeth: Gently remove with floss—avoid sharp objects—and see a dentist if needed.
  • Toothache: Rinse with warm water, use floss to remove lodged food, and see a dentist. Avoid applying aspirin or painkillers directly to the gums.

In dental emergencies, time is crucial. Quick action could mean saving your tooth.
